Putting Down Roots
I’ve been living with Devon Murphy for three years now.
He’s a sweet guy most of the time. A little self-absorbed, a little messy, and a little neurotic, but overall pretty easy to get along with. A little like me, in that he struggled against putting down roots and staying in one place.
As an author, I spend a few months with most characters. I decide who I’m writing about, I find out the pertinent details, and I write them. No more than six months later, I release them into the wild and let go of them for good. I once had someone ask me about a character I’d written and had to take a moment to remember who they were talking about.
In the case of Devon and his friends, it got much more complicated. I kept releasing them, but they just wouldn’t go away. They were in it for the long haul: nine books.
But three years later, here I am, in the position of actually saying goodbye to Devon, Jesse, and Fletcher for the last time. I have to admit, it’s a little scary. I mean, these guys have been here for me. I’ve got other books, but Rowan Harbor has always felt a little like home.
While I’m always going to love Rowan Harbor and I’ll miss writing books there, I have to admit, I’m looking forward to getting out of Oregon and into the rest of the universe again.
Tomorrow, I start work on a book that isn’t set there. Next year’s plans range from modern Florida, to the Old West, to imaginary Llangard.
I think Devon would approve.

Jesse’s only priority in life is protecting the people he loves, so he’s determined to see Rowan Harbor’s wards rebuilt. There’s just one problem: they’re missing an ingredient that can’t be ordered online.
Jesse volunteers to search for the missing component in the realm of the fae, but his boyfriend, Sean, isn’t letting him go alone. The town has an enemy among the fae, so they’ll need to keep a low profile. Along their way, they find unexpected allies, surprising enemies, and a whole host of problems.
The journey is a test of their endurance, but also of their relationship and their faith in each other. Can they find what they need and get back home in one piece in time for the summer solstice?
