Glasgow Lads Series

The Glasgow Lads series centers around an all-LGBTQ football/soccer team in contemporary Scotland. “I’ll always want more of you.”

Robert McKenzie lives to work. He’s fresh out of university as a video-game entrepreneur, and his new app could actually save lives. But burning the candle at both ends means missing out on the best parts of his own life—including his boyfriend, Liam.

Liam Carroll works to live. His job as a bartender pays the rent—if not always the heating bill—and that’s plenty for now. But Robert’s workaholism reminds Liam his own life is going nowhere, and his own dreams are scaring the pants off him.

To jolt them out of their ruts, Robert invents a new game: He and Liam are to take turns offering each other sexy new challenges with irresistible rewards.

Of course, Robert gets more than he bargained for, as Liam takes their game in one surprising direction after another. Whether it’s in the bedroom, on the football pitch, or at the pub (or even the supermarket?), the things they learn about each other—and themselves—could change their lives forever.

Play Hard is the feel-good, staying-in-love story the world needs right now!

Note: This happier-ever-after novella features the main characters of Playing With Fire but can be read as a stand-alone story.

Blog Tour ~ Play Hard (A Glasgow Lads Novella) by Avery Cockburn (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Thanks so much to Bayou Book Junkie for hosting me today! I’m Avery Cockburn, author of the Glasgow Lads series, a set of contemporary m/m sports romances set in Scotland. The newest release, Play Hard, is a followup “happier-ever-after” novella featuring Robert and Liam, the heroes of Playing With Fire.

One of my favorite parts of writing is learning more about the wonderful Scottish places my books are set, then sharing what I’ve learned with my readers. It’s easy to convey the grandeur of medieval castles like the ancestral home of Lord Andrew in Playing to Win, or the breathtaking beauty of the Orkney Islands, where Evan from Playing in the Dark was raised. But with less glamorous places, such as the Shettleston district of Glasgow where Liam and Robert grew up, I have to dig a wee bit deeper.

“People Make Glasgow” is one of the city’s slogans, and nowhere is that more evident than at 577 Shettleston Road. Before 2014, the area featured a dilapidated building that once had housed a lamplighters depot back in the day when gas streetlights had to be lit by hand (see a photo here: https://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/lifestyle/13632682.eye-spy-glasgow-youre-having-a-giraffein-shettleston/).

But in 2014 Glasgow was set to host the Commonwealth Games. Most of the sporting venues and athlete housing would be located in the East End, which Shettleston is a part of, so the area underwent a massive redevelopment. The old lamplighting depot at the entrance to Shettleston was torn down, but that left the gable end of the tenement homes looking rather rough.

So the Shettleston Housing Association commissioned pupils at Eastbank Academy—Liam and Robert’s own secondary school—to make this spot worthy of its proud residents. And this was the result:

I love how the tree the giraffe is browsing looks like it’s growing out of the side of the building. There’s real vegetation planted at the giraffe’s feet to make it look like it’s wandering through the savannah. The whole thing is a bit cheeky and beautiful, just like the city itself.
