Have you ever waited anxiously for a sequel and hoped it would live up to your expectations? I am so thrilled that Ms. Finley’s Can’t Say Goodbye was so perfect and fit into the unique football world she created. This is a standalone, but it all starts with her book Blindsided, where football legends Talon and Miller fall in love and pave the way for other queer athletes to feel confident to come out. I love these two guys so much. Then I visited them in Football Royalty, where their sons, Peyton and Brady, are in college with their own careers to pave.
This story takes us to the beginning of their younger son Brady’s poly relationship. He meets two SEALs, Kit and Preston, for some fun. Brady feels he can only enjoy these fleeting moments as he is training for a career to be a sports agent. His goal is to represent his gifted brother Peyton, a rising football star, just like both of their dads. The pressure is on poor Brady, who has a mature and nurturing nature. Being with his SEALs lets him be cared for, which is a welcome and needed change.
This story has a strong plot and very complex characters. It should come with a warning that putting the book down will be almost painful once you start reading it. I devoured the novel as the three continue this relationship spaced miles apart and seeing each other too infrequently. All of their hellos end in goodbyes, and it’s wearing down the men. This relationship just plain works, but the trick is keeping it alive with all of their responsibilities and wanting the best for each other.
Thanks to the author for letting us back into the often crazy but totally loving world of the Talon and Miller brood, along with their extended made-up family. I can’t recommend this novel enough. Happy Reading!
