About Wrecked But Not Ruined

I had everything. I was going to college and having a blast. Enjoying myself and not taking much seriously. But then, two years ago, everything changed.

A car wreck destroyed my life. It sent me into a total tailspin. I walked away, even when everyone said I wouldn’t be able to.

But I haven’t recovered from it.

The only thing I have left is my best friend, but I’m sure he’ll give up on me soon. Even so, I can’t fight the truth . . . I’m irrevocably ruined.

College is coming to an end, and I couldn’t be happier to finally start my real life.

Ethan and I had plans. So many amazing plans. And then, everything changed. He was in a horrific wreck, but he miraculously survived. Except it took a piece of him.

I’ve tried to help him get it back. Tried to get him to go to a trauma support group and come back to me.

He thinks he’s broken, but I know the real Ethan is still there. The brave, outgoing man I’ve known my entire life. And I’m going to help him see the truth. That he can overcome this.

That he may have been a little wrecked, but he wasn’t ruined.

This is the third in the Spark of Hope series, which is based around a support group that is based at a gym. The first book involved Ben, who owns the gym and has a rescue complex, and Colby, who arrives from an abusive relationship. Roman is Ben’s brother and, as a cop, also tries to save people, even if Brooks doesn’t think he wants or needs saving. These characters appear in this story, but you don’t have to have read them to enjoy it. It’s probably the most stand-alone of the series so far. Ethan works at the gym and has his own trauma, having survived a car crash that he shouldn’t have. He’s never come to terms with this and now can’t travel in a car. His best friend since childhood has always stood by him, but they are just friends. Ethan loves Knox, but he’s not gay like Knox. A wet dream though changes everything; Ethan is confused and starts seeing things differently. He can’t afford to lose Knox; is it worth risking exploring for either of them?
These books are so emotional. The connection between Ethan and Knox is clear from the start. Knox would do anything for Ethan; he just wants him to be happy. Ethan broke my heart; he struggles so much to accept that his trauma is as valid as anyone else’s. The balance between Ethan’s struggles and his relationship with Knox is pitched perfectly; their love evolves so beautifully. It was so good to see the guys from the first two books flourishing and supporting Ethan.
A wonderful story full of emotion, hope, and love. If you’ve not read the series, start at the beginning. If you have, you’ll love this addition to it.

I was really looking forward to this story, and for the most part, I was pleased with the results.

Ethan and Knox were both likable and all-around great guys. I loved their friendship and later their relationship, but I wish the transition from friends to lovers had been done better.

As a GFY, Ethan’s situation that causes his sudden attraction to Knox happened in an interesting way, but the storyline would have been more believable had Knox been currently, or even previously, attracted to Ethan.

As for the writing, I found it a bit “telly” rather than “showy”, and I thought some of the inner-dialogue, as well as the conversations between Ethan and Knox, to be repetitive.

Knox and Ethan had good chemistry and were definitely sexy together. Although the story could have been tightened up a bit, it was still an enjoyable read.
