Mixed Messages, Book 4

Dylan Mitchell wants to get married.

However, after seven years of being engaged, that’s looking slightly doubtful. After going through ten wedding planners, they’re gaining a reputation somewhat akin to Henry the Eighth on the wedding circuit.

Gabe has vetoed symbolic dove releases, forests of flowers, fire-eating performers, and puce as a wedding colour. He’s confounded an army of wedding professionals, and now Dylan, the man who knows and loves him better than anyone, has joined the ranks of the confused. Can anything please his fiancé and get them to the altar?

From bestselling author Lily Morton comes the sequel to Rule Breaker. A romantic comedy novella full of family chaos, meddling friends, sexy bathroom encounters, and love. Always love.

I sigh. Another one bites the dust. At this point in our journey towards matrimony, I’ve said those words so many times I could part-time as a Freddie Mercury impressionist. Gabe looks at me as if expecting me to leap in and save him, but it’s every man for himself. I dealt with the last five wedding planners. It’s his turn.

And I must say it’s a very entertaining use of an hour as I watch Gabe finally meet his match. Helen moves from a vigorous defence of her wedding vision—one that belongs only in a Netflix historical drama—to indignation and, at last, rage. It’s a familiar destination if you’re dealing with Gabe.

Finally, however, she accepts defeat, saying in a very shrill voice, “You will never know marital bliss with that kind of attitude, Mr Foster.” Slinging her pashmina over her shoulder, she exits our house in a cloud of ire and Chanel perfume.

I stretch as Gabe comes back into the room after letting her out. “Helen, one. Gabe, nought.” I mime a tennis swing. “New balls, please.”

“That’s a very mixed metaphor and explains a great deal about your sports knowledge.” The love of my life heads to the cupboard and pulls out a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label. He waggles the bottle at me. “Want one?”

Now? Isn’t it a bit early?”

“You tell me. Haven’t we got another planner coming in an hour? They’re like excessively happy buses.”

“I’ll have half the bottle,” I say promptly.

What a treat it was to revisit Gabe and Dylan once more! They are without a doubt one of my favorite couples. Gabe’s honest pleasure of realizing how lucky he is to have Dylan in his life doesn’t get old. The only problem is this engagement is seven years long and Gabe has driven off so many wedding planners.
Lily is quick to toss out so many British names that I have learned to skip over them as they are unknown to me. There seemed to be quite a few in this novella but it didn’t matter because the guys were back and in perfect form.
You really need to read Rule Breaker to get a true understanding of how warped Gabe’s past life was and how far the men have come in their relationship. Dylan had put up with a lot initially and he won’t give up on Gabe now. Dylan’s heart is huge and Gabe needs this man more than air. Together they figure out why this is an engagement that appears to never end.
Lily delights with witty dialogue, wonderful couples that we get to revisit from prior books, and a love that is just destined to be. I thoroughly recommend Vow Maker and hope you enjoy the reunion with these amazing men as much as I did. Happy reading!

This is a sequel to Rule Breaker, and you really need to have read it to enjoy this fully. It is, however, a wonderful, wonderful book that will steal your heart. It is the story of how Gabe and Dylan get together.
What is so amazing is that although this is written five years later, the characters are exactly the same. Funny, snarky, and loving, they will capture your heart all over again. Gabe is one of my all-time favourite characters from the author; his tough exterior hides such a vulnerable heart.
The story follows their attempts to plan their wedding. It is hilarious, sweet, funny, and emotional. Gabe loves Dylan absolutely, but he still struggles to be open when his fears start to bubble up. Dylan knows this, and his steadfast support and patience is just gorgeous. As with many of Lily’s stories, the side characters are wonderful. I suspect she may well be pestered now for a story for Joe, the Wedding planner. I may, I confess, be adding my voice too.
I adored seeing these two finally saying I do. Just perfect. It is a must-read.
