Cosplay Killer

4.5 Stars

I don’t usually read a lot of mystery books, but I’m glad I decided to get out of my comfort zone and read Dahlia Donovan’s first book in the London Podcast Mystery series, The Cosplay Killer.

Dannel is a firefighter who also happens to be autistic. Through the story, we see how having autism affects him, his everyday life, and his relationships.

Osian was a paramedic until a particularly bad experience trying, and failing, to save a patient. He lives with Dannel, his longtime boyfriend, and true-crime podcast cohost.

These two find themselves embroiled in a true-crime mystery of their own after visiting a Comic-Con where one of their friends is murdered. They have to figure out who the killer is before they either get blamed for it or they get killed for it themselves.

I really enjoyed this book even though it was not my usual cup of tea. The author did a great job of developing the characters and the story. I will definitely read more from this author in the future!

Ghost Light Killer

4.5 Stars

Oz and D are back in the second book of Dahlia Donovan‘s series The London Mystery. The Ghost Light Killer is just as awesome as the first book, The Cosplay Killer!

Longtime boyfriends, Osian and Dannel, are thrust into another murder mystery while they are trying to investigate a haunting at the theater where their neighbor Ian has been working. There are some new characters to question so they can find the murderer before they are again threatened with death, themselves.

This series is so great, if you’re into mysteries and true crime then you’ll enjoy these books a lot. You’ll also enjoy a nice surprise at the end!

I love that Dahlia is not intimidated by writing an autistic main character. She really brings light to a diagnosis a lot of people know of but do not know much about.

Ghost Light Killer

3.5 Stars
To be honest, the first book in this series didn’t entirely work for me so I was a bit hesitant to continue. I’m glad I gave the London Podcast Mystery series another try because I enjoyed Ghost Light Killer.

I don’t know that the series is officially classified as a cozy mystery, but it definitely has that feel for me. As with the first book, Ghost Light Killer opens with the long-established couple finding themselves in a seemingly innocuous situation that quickly takes an intriguing and dangerous turn. I enjoyed the setting and circumstances in Ghost Light Killer. The theater backdrop was fun and fresh, lending believability to the over-the-top characterizations and some of the sillier aspects of the story. I also liked that the mystery had a bit of a ghostly side to it as well.

In the first book, I lamented that Osian and Dannel didn’t carry that palpable chemistry and connection I look for in books featuring established couples. Happily, that was much more present in Ghost Light Killer. I loved that Dannel’s view of the world and struggles with social constructs as an Autistic are noted and embraced by the story and characters, most especially Osian. This time, it wasn’t only that sort of friendship and support that came across in the moments where one of the characters would struggle, there were romantic and sweet moments between Osian and Dannel that demonstrated their deep bond and love. Seeing this side of the main characters’ relationship definitely hooked me more and made me all the more invested in the story and series overall.

Whereas the first book left me wanting for the romantic relationship aspect, it overwhelmed me in the secondary character information department. This series has a vast collection of secondary characters, and they are sometimes thrown at the reader in a rapid-fire approach. While there still are a lot of names to keep track of, I found myself following along better in Ghost Light Killer. I don’t know if the pace was a little slower, I was familiar with some of the names and relationships this time, or if each character felt more important to the overall story, but I enjoyed the mystery much more this time. My enjoyment was only further amplified as the revelation of the culprit occurred because I hadn’t predicted it at all this time around.

If you enjoy non-traditional characters, quirky humor, and cozy mysteries, this series is definitely worth checking out.

London Podcast Mystery Series
Cosplay Killer
(book 1)

Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about shifters and damsels in distress. She prefers irreverent humour and unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive collection of books and video games.
