Ten years ago, I
kissed my best friend.
Six years ago, my
life changed and I went from being an unknown kid from a small town to a
world-renowned rock star. Before leaving Gaspar, I told Ali we’d still be
together. I made promises I didn’t keep, and I lied over and over again. I
threw our plans out the window and made a life for myself.
I’ve barely had time
to go home, because touring keeps me away. We haven’t been in touch in years,
but after this tour, I’m heading home to find the only person who knows my
deepest, darkest secret, and beg for forgiveness.
Ten years ago, I
kissed my best friend, and his name is Alejandro Barerra. My Ali.
He may never forgive
me for the broken promises or for breaking his heart, and I’m afraid he’ll
never want to talk to me again, but he’s the only one who knows the real me,
and I’m determined to win him back. Even if it means risking it all.

“Why me?”

He furrows his brows. “What do you mean?”

“Why do you want me?”

“Have you not heard what I’ve told you?” he asks, taking a step forward.

“You’ve said I’m everything to you. Yeah, I heard that.”

“But,” he offers, knowing I have more to say.

I drop my arms and grip the edge of the dresser. “But those are just words. We’ve said a lot to each other over the years. You’ve consistently told me one thing just to do something that completely contradicts it. Why should I believe you now? Or ever?”

“I’m trying to get you to realize I’m not like that anymore. If I say something, I want you to believe it. I’ve had years to dwell on my bullshit. I’ve had so many regrets, and honestly, if I was in your shoes, I don’t know if I’d forgive me. But you’re better than me, Ali. You always have been, and you make me want to be better. For you.”

My heart sings at his words, but I can’t allow myself to be naive. “Let’s pretend I tell you that I forgive you for everything and that you do have a chance. Then what? This is the problem we always had. I let you suck me back into a secret relationship because you weren’t out yet, and that’s still the case. I will not be a skeleton in your closet. I will not be forced to love you in secret.”

He takes the remaining steps to reach me, wrapping his hands around mine. “Tell me I have a chance, Ali. Tell me you’d give us one last shot and I’ll risk it all. I’ll risk everything for you. For us.”

5 Stars

This author drew me so fast into their story, that I was wrapped in the fictional world that consisted entirely of Merrick and Alejandro.

I love with a story has two POV’s, it gives me the thrill to fully understand how each character thinks and honestly feels about what is happening.

The way that both characters go back in time to the beginning of their friendship was another big plus for me. It definitely gave me such a clear perspective on how their relationship grew and changed throughout the years.

I was able to see through Ali’s words how much he loved Merrick through the years and how many times Merrick had crushed not only his heart but his soul. The many times when Ali truly believed it was finally their time only to be left with either an empty bed or an empty house.

Merrick’s all about the image. Having girls hanging all over him, drinking and doing drugs, living the high life, {yeah right}. His journey has finally come to an end, right? He has paid his dues, it’s his time to live his truth, right? Questions, is all that this character has. I actually enjoyed seeing the change in Merrick’s character. He was always trying to look out for his crew and to not mess up their futures but all the while destroying his happiness and tearing apart his soul.

This is a powerful read about a many chances story. Two men finally owning up to their past mistakes and taking that leap of trust to try this one final time. At times this can be an emotional read but there are always parts that are humorous as well as plenty of hot scenes.

4 Stars

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was sexy and sweet, but heartbreaking at moments.

This book is part of a series, but I haven’t read the others and I was able to follow along fairly easily.

Merrick was a great character. He was sexy but was conflicted, he was strong but afraid. I really enjoyed getting to know him and his past.

Ali was a much stronger person than someone his age should have been. Being in love but having to hide it tore him up but his devotion to Merrick was beautiful. Even when he wanted to hate him he loved him.

I will say the only thing I didn’t enjoy so much was the flashback’s but I understand why they were needed.

3.5 Stars

Risking It All is book 4 in the Kingston Brothers series and it can be read as a standalone.

From the moment I read the blurb I was completely drawn to it, unfortunately, the story while entertaining didn’t exactly live up to my expectations.

I liked Alejandro (aka Ali), he was a sweetheart and very family-oriented, although he lacked a bit of backbone in regards to Merrick. The way he dumped his boyfriend—who seemed lovely, btw—because Merrick came back for a few days in between tours or how fast he went back together with Merrick when he returned that last time, even if they were still secret boyfriends, didn’t help matters.

I didn’t particularly care for Merrick. I completely get that everyone comes out on their own time and that he had his music and fans to lose if it went wrong, but his reasons of why he hid his sexuality from his brothers or his bandmates, with whom he spent most of his time, were flimsy at best and, considering how they reacted when he finally told them, completely unfounded.

The secondary characters, Merrick’s brothers and his bandmates, and Alejandro’s sister and mom and his friends were a great addition to the story. I loved their interactions with Merrick and Alejandro so much.

While I wasn’t completely sold on the lead characters *cough Merrick cough*, it was a good read and I’m sure fans of this series and Isabel Lucero would like it more than I did.
