After Felix by Lily Morton

Close Proximity, Book 3

Sometimes the best love stories come in two parts.

When Felix met handsome journalist Max Travers, it was lust at first sight. It was just his luck that he then had to develop a terrible case of feelings and got his heart broken. However, two and a half years later, he’s over all of that. His job is going well, he has good friends, and he doesn’t lack for male company. Which, of course, is when Max has to come bursting back into his life.

Felix Jackson will always be the one who got away to Max. He’s spent their time apart regretting his actions and hoping for a second chance. When an accident lands him in Felix’s less than tender care, Max is determined to grab this opportunity. The only problem is that Felix is equally determined that he doesn’t.

From bestselling author, Lily Morton comes a story of missed opportunities, second chances, and two very stubborn men. This is the third book in the Close Proximity series, but it can be read as a standalone.

“How old do you think I am?” he says mock flirtatiously, leaning in close enough that I catch his scent of sandalwood. It brings back memories of rolling all over those soft sheets in that hotel room. I’ve been perturbed to find my mind straying to memories of that room a few more times than it should have over the last week.

He’s watching me intently again, and I swallow hard and tap my teeth thoughtfully. “I think probably sixty.” He opens his mouth in mock horror, and I laugh. “Only because you’re so wise,” I say reverently. “Being intelligent really piles the years on.”

He shakes his head. “I’m thirty-seven,” he says, trying not to laugh. “Can you see my crow’s feet?”

“A crow never made those lines. That’s surely got to be a bigger bird.” I wink at him as he laughs loudly. I eye the table where a book is sitting next to his pint. “What are you reading?”

He looks slightly awkward. “Ruth Rendell.”

“Oh, Inspector Wexford. My grandma used to watch those on the telly,” I say cheerfully.

“Thank you so much for that information,” he says darkly. “It’s made my day so happy.”

I laugh. “It’s like I carry sunshine wherever I go.” I eye him. “So, do you like reading crime novels?”

“I do.” He smiles. “I’ve always thought it would be incredibly easy to murder someone and get away with it, so I like it that people get found out in these books.”

I blink. “Said no man ever who hoped to get laid.”

He laughs. “I’m not going to murder you, Felix. Your arse is far too perky for that to happen.”

“I always knew my buttocks could save a life.”

He bites his lip, laughter brewing in those dark eyes as he leans forward. “The only way I’ll kill you is when you die from an overdose of the pleasure that my cock gives you.”

After draining my drink, I put the bottle on the table and stand up to grab my coat. “Pride goes before a fall, Max,” I say. “Maybe we’d better get you back to the hotel before you break something.”

I was intrigued by this innovative concept of a before-and-after, chronicling the lives of two men that happened upon each other one day.

Felix is a bright light and enjoys life. At first, I felt he was a tad cold and very cavalier about life (granted, he is young) but then I sensed there was something very deep and guarded in his soul. Max also seemed very casual with his attitude of a physical relationship, but knowing Ms. Morton, I felt there would be reasons for his almost frantic attitude against permanency.

The men are complex and even though the book is interlaced with a somber feeling on their joint denials of commitment, this book morphed into a more amusing “Lily-like” atmosphere. The beginning part is sad and definitely made me blink back tears, but the reader will be rewarded with the After Felix segment that ties both parts together perfectly.

Max at first just confused and annoyed the heck out of me. Trust me, dear readers, when I tell you he will redeem himself. He does become the man you feel deserves the wounded but incredibly strong Felix. It was so much fun when you see the wary young man realize there is so much more to Max than he previously thought. Their brilliant banter and intense attraction made the words almost crackle with energy. In Lily’s perfect way they embark on a hilarious but touching trip that hopefully will make Felix see the real Max. Ironically their time apart may have been crucial for their future.

Another special treat was seeing the men I have grown to care about from Lily’s different series pop in. I especially loved the familial and loyal connection between Max and his delightful stepbrother Zeb.

Thank you Ms. Morton for another enriching romance that was joyful and genuine. Happy Reading!

I am a sucker for all things snark, and I’ve discovered that Lily Morton is definitely the Queen of Snark. I LOVED the banter between Max and Felix. It ticked all my boxes and even added a few I had overlooked.

Can we address how HOT the chemistry was between these two? Wow. Snark and steamy; it’s a double whammy! Whether they gave in or not, the sexual tension was so thick you could feel it OFF page.

Max and Felix first met in a bookstore, in what was meant to be just a hookup. Somehow it kept happening, until they decided to continue a no-strings, and NO emotions, attached arrangement. It was inevitable that emotions were going to come into play, at least on Felix’s side. After overhearing a conversation at a wedding, Felix decides he needs to walk away. Thus ending the first section of the book, Before Felix.

I love how the author divided the book in two: Before Felix and After Felix. The book is mostly told from Felix’s POV, but we do have a few chapters where we see it from Max’s POV. In After Felix, over two years have passed. This is when Max comes to realize he wants Felix back. That is not going to be an easy task, as both men are equally stubborn, and Felix has wounds inflicted by his parents, then duplicated by Max.

This book touches your heart in many ways. It will make you laugh, break your heart, and put it together again. Both men were likable characters, but Felix came out ahead, because there were times I was as mad at Max as Felix was. I also felt for Max, too. Ugh. He wasn’t an ex you can put in the ‘hate’ category, darn it.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lily Morton. I realize I did it a little backwards. I don’t feel like my enjoyment for the book was hindered by not reading the others, but I know when I do read them, I’m gonna have a broader perspective of all the characters and events that happened before this story and the events that take place during the years between before and after Felix. It will give the re-read of this book a different feel, but I don’t regret the reading order. If this is the first book you pick up, you will still enjoy the storyline. It stands alone quite well, actually.

This is a very well written book, that will draw you in and keep you entertained until you reach the end. I highly recommend it!
