Their dark secret could destroy her family

When Abbie Rambally meets the couple next door for the first time, she’s convinced something isn’t right. Why are the Paynes so fascinated with her oldest son and why do they ask so many probing questions about him? Then Abbie’s loyal and dependable nanny quits without giving notice, and Jenna Payne is only too happy to step in and help out. But Abbie begins to suspect that the Paynes’ choice of neighborhood was no accident.

Though Abbie wants to believe she can trust her neighbors, too many things about the couple don’t add up. So when a stranger in a café calls Jenna by a different name and insists they’ve met before, one thing becomes clear. If Abbie doesn’t uncover what the Paynes are hiding, her family will be in terrible danger.

From an award-winning author comes the latest installment in the “gripping and powerful” Fearless Series. This nail-biting psychological thriller can be read as a stand-alone, and will leave you breathless until the final, jaw-dropping twist.

3.5 Stars!
Abbie and her husband Ty seem to have a wonderful yet busy life. Proud parents of three, ten-year-old Lucas and 9-year-old twins Alexis and Blake, Abbie is close to finishing her doctorate in Clinical Psychology and on the path to becoming a Neuropsychologist and Ty is a rising star in Cardio-thoracic surgery whose time away from his family is being felt by Lucas. Luckily, they have Olivia, their nanny, who has been with the family for years and adores the kids.
When new neighbors move in across the street things quickly begin to change. The wife, Jenna, initially pings Abbie’s radar as she seems to have an unusual curiosity about Lucas and his parentage and asks questions that immediately cause distrust and unease. The husband, Charlie, on the other hand, initially seems to sit back and let his wife take the dominant role and then is quick to jump in and defend Jenna’s weird behavior.
With everything Abbie has gone through in the past and the need to protect her family and the many secrets of her own, she will do anything she can to keep her and her family safe. Is it a mistake to let these new neighbors in and get close to her family? Will her past stay dead and buried or is it back to haunt her?
Winds of Fear is the 3rd book in the Fearless series that follows Abbie Rambally, formerly Abbie Cooper. I didn’t read the first 2 books and I have to wonder if that was at all the cause of my apathy towards Abbie. I had trouble warming to her character and never felt that connection I crave when I read a book like this. She was almost too perfect for me, I needed her to be more real, more relatable. However, I liked her husband Ty and the children quite a bit.
The villain/villains reminded me a little of the villains from the show The Following (Don’t ask me why that’s what I pictured) but they were done well. Yes, we get to know them right away, but it didn’t detract from the plot or the buildup of the overall suspense.
In the end, while this is possibly a standalone, it is still part of a series and I for one think it will appeal much more to readers who’ve been with Abbie from the beginning. That’s not to say that new readers won’t enjoy the story, there’s just more to Abbie than we get in this one book, there’s history to why she is the way she is and does the things she does. And frankly, there’s a character we meet along the way in Winds of Fear I’d like to know more about.
